The Crow

The Crow remake has seen another setback as star Jason Momoa and director Corin Hardy withdrew from the film.

The latest problem plaguing the film has to do with a combination of Sony close to exiting as the film’s worldwide distributor as well as creative and financial differences with Samuel Hadida, whose Davis Films holds underlying rights and is financing the film, according to Deadline.

Production was set to start within the next five weeks in Budapest with Hardy at the helm and the film in pre-production. When Sony announced in September 2017 they picked up the film for worldwide distribution with a tentative release date of October 11, 2019. When Hadida failed to close the deal, Sony went on the verge of pulling out of the deal, which lead to the exit of both Momoa and Hardy.

The Crow was to be a remake of the 1994 film starring Brandon Lee and directed by Alex Proyas based on the James O’Barr’s graphic novel about a resurrected musician with superhuman abilities out to avenge the deaths of his fiancé and himself from a crime syndicate.

The 1994 film was marred in infamy with Lee’s tragic death on the set, but the film maintained its following with praise from critics and audiences alike. The remake has seen numerous directors come and go, studio changes and actors like Bradley Cooper, Mark Wahlberg, Channing Tatum and even Tom Hiddleston in talks to star as protagonist, Eric Draven.

The remakes has been in development hell since Stephen Norrington announced his intent to write and direct the project. Proyas spoke out against the remake.

Will the film be remade or has the remake’s chaotic history doomed it?

  1. some movies r best left alone. the crow needs no remake. just let brandon’s legacy of being the crow stand as it is and come up with new movie ideas lazy hollywood… pshhh

    • It just speaks of bad karma and juju after what happened to Brandon even if it’s closer to the original work.

  2. Technically, the original, which is my absolute favorite movie. Period. Hands down, Period. Is a serious departure from the graphic novel. If people took a second to glance over the source, i.e graphic novel, they would see that if they stick to it, it isn’t anywhere near what was the original movie.
    Just saying.
