The Witcher is a video game known for its open world exploration, intense combat, and having a gritty, Game of Thrones-level storyline full of violence, betrayal, sex, and murder. Netflix is turning the game into a new series that premieres in 2019 and here’s our first look at the star, Henry Cavil, as the game’s protagonist Geralt of Rivia.

Polish writer Andrzej Sapkowski wrote The Witcher books which are heralded for their complex storyline. See, The Witcher isn’t your normal video game. It delves deep into the lore and world in which the story exists. It features all the same fun button-mashing of a video game, sure, but the level of immersion, due to the writing and voice acting, is unlike many other games out there. Will all this translate into an awesome series? Well, showrunner Lauren Schmidt Hissrich thinks so and so does Netflix who is investing a lot of money in this adventure. Plus, Netflix brought on Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, Batman v. Superman) to fill in the shoes of Geralt which is a great start.

The Witcher is certainly a great game to adapt as a series. The story is ripe with potential to tell long, epic stories about Geralt and any number of other characters. Medieval fantasy seems to be coming up too, with this show and the Amazon Lord of the Rings prequel in the works. However, I do have to say, Cavill looks weird AF in that Lucius Malfoy wig.
