New Trailer for ‘The Martian’ Adds a Little Hendrix

If you haven’t seen or heard anything about The Martian, well, you must have been stranded on Mars for the past four or five months. The Ridley Scott vehicle has been all over the place, from production stills, to promo videos, to a debut trailer. Now, a second full-length trailer focuses on the action and the tension, and adds a little Jimi Hendrix:

And one more time, here is that synopsis:

During a manned mission to Mars, Astronaut Mark Watney (Matt Damon) is presumed dead after a fierce storm and left behind by his crew. But Watney has survived and finds himself stranded and alone on the hostile planet. With only meager supplies, he must draw upon his ingenuity, wit and spirit to subsist and find a way to signal to Earth that he is alive. Millions of miles away, NASA and a team of international scientists work tirelessly to bring “the Martian” home, while his crewmates concurrently plot a daring, if not impossible rescue mission. As these stories of incredible bravery unfold, the world comes together to root for Watney’s safe return. Based on a best-selling novel, and helmed by master director Ridley Scott, THE MARTIAN features a star studded cast that includes Jessica Chastain, Kristen Wiig, Kate Mara, Michael Pena, Jeff Daniels, Chiwetel Ejiofor, and Donald Glover.

I have been going back and forth on The Martian. I was absolutely floored by Andy Weir’s novel, so any disservice in a theatrical version is what keeps me at arm’s length. On top of the fact that Ridley Scott has been struggling to make a quality film for a decade, and I have been sucked in by his trailers (for Prometheus and The Counselor, especially) in the past. That being said, this trailer does have my attention, which may have something to do with “All Along the Watchtower.”

The Martian hits theaters October 2.
