Scott Gimple, the showrunner for The Walking Dead admitted there is a possibility that Lauren Cohan (Maggie) could be leaving the show at the end of season eight.
Cohan’s contract is over at the end of this season and she is in negotiations with AMC to sign a new deal. Reports have suggested that although she’s not trying to get the exact amount Andrew Lincoln who plays Rick Grimes is paid, but she does feel that she should be getting close to what he’s paid as Maggie is a significant character of the show and has been with the program since season two.
Scott Gimple confirmed to TVLine that negotiations are still ongoing
“These things do happen in TV. But we’re talking. Lauren is an actor who has such intuition and such power. Hopefully, it all works out,” said Gimple.
Cohan is unhappy with the offers the network had put before her and is said to be seriously considering her options as she is reportedly looking at some TV pilot offers. She has also been posting on her Instagram account pictures of herself and Mark Wahlberg from Mile 22.
Mile 22 is an action film starring Cohan, Wahlberg, John Malkovich, Iko Uwais, and Ronda Rousey under the direction of Peter Berg.
This doesn’t mean she is definitely leaving The Walking Dead to do more movies as she could do the show and movies at the same time,
look at actress Danai Gurira who plays Michonne, she was just in the film Black Panther which was absolutely fantastic. Even though Cohan’s character leaving the show might not hit fans as hard as it did with Chandler Riggs’ Carl, it would still leave an impression plus Maggie is pregnant.
How would they go about her departure from the show? They would have to kill her off, and if that’s the case, then that means they would have to kill the baby as well. The show would get pretty dark, even for The Walking Dead
Maggie is still alive in the comics, and she plays a significant role but so does Carl and look what they did to him. AMC has also replaced Scott Gimple as showrunner for season nine and is handing over the reins to Angela Kang the first female showrunner for the AMC drama.
Hopefully, Kang can clean up the mess Gimple has created. As for Cohan, I don’t see her leaving the show, but it is a possibility that she walks if AMC doesn’t give her a pay increase. Cohan is a fantastic actress, and her character is a massive part of the show.
